Deconstructed

Design

The Design Challenge

The building materials for this project available to us were remnants of demolished row homes in Baltimore, Maryland. The City government wanted to repurpose the materials left over in order to create functional furniture for families in need.

The Materials:

  • Nails

  • Roof beams

  • Floorboards

Research

We talked to families and individuals about their most used furniture and occupied spaces in their homes. We then created a diagram that highlighted these insights.

65% of those surveyed said that their living room was the most used, with the bedroom being second and kitchen third.

This also depended on the size of the families and homes.

Final Design

I settled on a mid-century coffee table using former roof beams.

The table was built using a minimal amount of materials, and constructed in a way that could easily be built for families with prepared precut and pre drilled materials.
